Top 10 Domain Name Blunders

  1. You let your web designer - or web host - manage the domain name, rather than your experienced IT person.  Immediately - or over time - things need to change and neither party has the necessary tools get problems sorted out.

  2. You were told it’s easy by an advertisement, friend, or someone who has done it before.  Better yet, you watched an IT professional get things going in under three minutes;  it did not seem so complicated when they did it.  An experienced IT person can assess and react to a plethora of variable; when they know the business they make it look easy.

  3. You register a domain name with a discount provider only to watch them go out of business and your domain name now hosts the Internet’s newest adult entertainment site.  There are hundreds of accredited, by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), that may not be in business tomorrow.

  4. You register a domain name for a great price, while unknowingly purchase a multitude of unnecessary services that seemed like they were part of a checkout process.   Domain registration for $1.99 is never that cheap.

  5. You receive an official renewal notice, pay the bill, and everything seems fine.  Few months later you go to make a change and realize your domain name is no longer registered where you thought it was.  Should have read the fine print on that invoice; you got scammed.

  6. You - or your web designer - change web hosts, create a website, move your website, etc; you convert all domain name servers as instructed, then sit around wondering why there is no new email.  Your new host asked that your DNS records be updated, and you obliged, without realizing the complete impact on your business.

  7. You purchase a web hosting account and setup individual domain accounts for each domain name.  Confusing? That’s the point.   There is an overlap in terminology that leads to many blunders.   Now you have several websites and cannot figure out how to forward any of them together.

  8. You changed your Internet service providers in your office and now are not sending and receiving e-mail.   Later on, lack of information only amplifies the problem as the service provider’s technician, IT person, web designer, web host, domain registrar, and domain host are all involved in what should have been a smooth transition.

  9. Your IT guy was asked to make domain name changes, but his lack of proficiency in DNS got the best of him.  Unknown to you, many IT people do not have a firm understanding of domain name services.

  10. Your outbound mail is not reaching recipients.  Your office is in need of a Reverse DNS Record to cure the problem.  Everyone involved mistakes rDNS with DNS and the problem only gets worse.  When you think someone finally has a handle on the situation, you plow into a wall of incompetence from level-one techs on every “800” number you call.
