Our approach to Search Engine Optimization

SiteBento Personalization and Management is centered around SEO.  All of our clients experience positive results in SEO rank since we follow design, content, quality, and technical guidelines established by the Google crawler.  However, SEO is a large area with many different facets.

Search Engine Optimization ranges from just the proper basics to full fledged marketing campaigns that aggregate Social Networks, Blogging, Link Exchange, and Advertising to bring traffic.   This really depends on what kinds of returns he expects on a reasonable budget.     Questions to ask is anything related to competitive analysis, perceptions of successful SEO campaigns,  time and budget constraints, etc.

At its root, a successful SEO strategy is to create high quality content that search engines will want to rank, and use it to drive traffic.  A step up from there is addition of Google AdWords Express (we're a Google Engage/AdWords partner) .  Finally, aggressive social media and link-building campaigns for large scale projects.  All these have to be done in steps, and a successful SEO strategy takes months to develop.

The guidelines I mentioned earlier are critical.  Here is what we follow:

Design and Content
  • Make a site with a clear hierarchy and text links. Every page should be reachable from at least one static text link.
  • Site map to your users with links that point to the important parts of your site. If the site map has an extremely large number of links, you may want to break the site map into multiple pages.
  • Create a useful, information-rich site, and write pages that clearly and accurately describe your content.
  • Try to use text instead of images to display important names, content, or links. The Google crawler doesn't recognize text contained in images. If you must use images for textual content, consider using the "ALT" attribute to include a few words of descriptive text.
Quality of Content
  • Make pages primarily for users, not for search engines. Don't deceive your users or present different content to search engines than you display to users, which is commonly referred to as "cloaking."
  • Avoid tricks intended to improve search engine rankings. A good rule of thumb is whether you'd feel comfortable explaining what you've done to a website that competes with you. Another useful test is to ask, "Does this help my users? Would I do this if search engines didn't exist?"
  • Don't participate in link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or "bad neighborhoods" on the web, as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links.
  • Don't use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc.

Why Should Start-Ups choose SiteBento?

Let’s face it, there are lots of business launching this year that are well funded that have little concern over the costs of a simple website, or with IT professionals handling all their email.  Then there is the rest of us;  entrepreneurs with little more than a good idea and a plan to make it successful.

In today’s information driven world, many of us will consider a website as the number one priority - something about having your own “office space on the web” makes things look official.  Especially if you are working from home, shared office space, a business incubator, having a web presence just makes things more real.

In the entrepreneurial spirit, many business men and women will make their pilgrimage to GoDaddy (or other registrar) and begin their seemingly simple task of building a website.  Hours, Days, Weeks later the website might eventually be good - but at what cost?  Did the start-up expenses of about $200 for domain, website builder, and email accurately represent the costs with the time, energy, and possibly bad decisions made to summon the idea to the Internet?

Then there will be others that recognize this task is not for them, and will likely be swallowed into the sea of web designers and hosting companies, promising to make them number one.  A flood of Internet jargon will result in invoices for website design, hosting, domain registrations, search engine optimization, search engine marketing, social networking, and adwords.  Thousands of dollars later they will live in bliss, or at least until payment is due.

That’s not what we do.  Instead, we sit down and talk about your busienss.  Figure out what “needs” to get done, what “wants” to get done, what “thinks” willl get done, and what will get done to make your business successful on the Internet.  We’ll personalize your SiteBento website, launch it, and give it all the features and functions that are best for your business today while keeping growth in mind. We’ll also setup Google Apps, Free or Business, and make sure that you can open an electronic dialogue with your clients and keep it going.   The best part, we’ll keep you focused on growing your business.

Top 10 Domain Name Blunders

  1. You let your web designer - or web host - manage the domain name, rather than your experienced IT person.  Immediately - or over time - things need to change and neither party has the necessary tools get problems sorted out.

  2. You were told it’s easy by an advertisement, friend, or someone who has done it before.  Better yet, you watched an IT professional get things going in under three minutes;  it did not seem so complicated when they did it.  An experienced IT person can assess and react to a plethora of variable; when they know the business they make it look easy.

  3. You register a domain name with a discount provider only to watch them go out of business and your domain name now hosts the Internet’s newest adult entertainment site.  There are hundreds of accredited, by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), that may not be in business tomorrow.

  4. You register a domain name for a great price, while unknowingly purchase a multitude of unnecessary services that seemed like they were part of a checkout process.   Domain registration for $1.99 is never that cheap.

  5. You receive an official renewal notice, pay the bill, and everything seems fine.  Few months later you go to make a change and realize your domain name is no longer registered where you thought it was.  Should have read the fine print on that invoice; you got scammed.

  6. You - or your web designer - change web hosts, create a website, move your website, etc; you convert all domain name servers as instructed, then sit around wondering why there is no new email.  Your new host asked that your DNS records be updated, and you obliged, without realizing the complete impact on your business.

  7. You purchase a web hosting account and setup individual domain accounts for each domain name.  Confusing? That’s the point.   There is an overlap in terminology that leads to many blunders.   Now you have several websites and cannot figure out how to forward any of them together.

  8. You changed your Internet service providers in your office and now are not sending and receiving e-mail.   Later on, lack of information only amplifies the problem as the service provider’s technician, IT person, web designer, web host, domain registrar, and domain host are all involved in what should have been a smooth transition.

  9. Your IT guy was asked to make domain name changes, but his lack of proficiency in DNS got the best of him.  Unknown to you, many IT people do not have a firm understanding of domain name services.

  10. Your outbound mail is not reaching recipients.  Your office is in need of a Reverse DNS Record to cure the problem.  Everyone involved mistakes rDNS with DNS and the problem only gets worse.  When you think someone finally has a handle on the situation, you plow into a wall of incompetence from level-one techs on every “800” number you call.

Managing Your Domain Name

The domain name is your business address on the Internet.   Even though the process acquiring a domain name is simple, most small business owners will quickly learn that it the management of domain names is far more perplexing.  In this blog, I will attempt to break down the entire process into several key concepts; here is PART 4 of "Managing Your Domain Name".

Unless you are working with a responsible, respectable, and knowledgeable IT/web/email provider, retain DNS control within your registrar.  Regardless of what you are told, you can make all of your web-based services work without ever relinquishing control of the DNS records to another company.   At SiteBento, we prefer to take DNS control because it makes our jobs easier, but we clearly disclose the fact that we can work around that.  Be involved, stay involved, and use tools to verify domain integrity.   One of the easiest ways to check your domain us using a WHOIS query, like the one available at http://www.whois.sc.  Simply put in your domain and see the records.

Your domain name is linked to an email address. Even though you may transition to a @yourbusiness.com, that’s not the address the domain name should be linked to.  If you have a problem with the domain name, you will also have a problem with the email going to it.  Setup a backup email account that you maintain periodically, and use it for all domain related needs.  You probably already have a GMail account - use it!  If that’s not enough, ICANN requires you to annually verify that your domain records are accurate.

Domain Name Renewals

There are plenty of companies out there looking for good domain names.   You can lose your domain name by unintentionally releasing it,  changing DNS records,  letting it expire, and letting it lapse. Fortunately, the law is on your side and there is plenty of means of re-establishing your domain name should you lose it.  However, that process is difficult; it is a lot easier to prevent a problem than it is to fix it.

This portion is more based on our opinion, and everyone has their own.  Your domain name is an asset that has value for your business.  In our eyes, it should be treated as such.  This means following a few simple rules:

  • Choose a reliable registrar.   Discounted or Free domain registrations are likely to land you in a world of pain.   Read the list of blunders to see why.  Our top choice is Network Solutions (http://www.networksolutions.com).
  • KNOW YOUR REGISTRAR.  See “blunders” 3,4, and 5 for details.  If you don’t know who they are, or how they operate, it’s only a matter of time before you have a problem.
